The Moment

Performance only ever happens somewhere, sometime, under conditions.

A performance is an event in time.

It is not the whole person.

Every performance has an apex — the point where preparation becomes delivery.

The race begins.

The question is asked.

The ball arrives.

The presentation starts.

The conversation can no longer be rehearsed.

At that point, what is available has to arrive.

This is the performance moment.

Mr Irrelevant

The last player selected in the NFL Draft. Then the opportunity arrived.

In 2022, Brock Purdy became the 262nd and final player selected in the NFL Draft.

The final pick carries a title: Mr Irrelevant.

The draft position was real. It represented the judgement available at that particular moment.

What it could not represent was everything Purdy might eventually become capable of expressing when the conditions changed.

A selection process had reached a conclusion.

The person had not.

What capability may already have existed before the opportunity to display it?

What changed when the conditions changed?

A judgement can describe the evidence available at the time.
It does not necessarily describe the limit of the person.

All He Needed Was the Moment

Kurt Warner and the distance between capability and opportunity.

Kurt Warner was not selected in the NFL Draft.

His route towards an NFL starting role moved through Arena Football, NFL Europe and years in which the biggest stage had still not arrived.

Then it did.

In 1999, an injury to St Louis Rams starting quarterback Trent Green opened the position.

Warner responded with an MVP season. A Super Bowl victory followed. So did the Super Bowl MVP award.

The opportunity changed quickly.

The person did not acquire all of that capability overnight.

The Lab Questions

When did Warner become capable of being an NFL quarterback?

When the league noticed?

When he started?

When he won?

Or had important parts of that capability existed before the performance evidence became visible?

Working proposition

Sometimes the apex moment does not create capability.
It reveals what previous conditions had not yet allowed us to see.

The Moment Nobody Applauds

Tomorrow morning, somebody will sit in a parked car outside a building for two minutes longer than usual.

They may be about to walk into their first day after six months away from work.

Nobody will film it. There will be no crowd. No commentator will call it brave.

But there will still be a performance moment.

Eventually they will open the door.

The moment doesn’t have to be big to matter.

The first sentence in a difficult conversation.

Pressing send on an application.

Walking back into a gym after years away.

Answering a question in a meeting when your instinct is to stay quiet.

Making the phone call you have avoided.

Saying no.

Saying yes.

Performance is not reserved for elite performers.

It occurs whenever something available inside us has to become behaviour in the world.

But what happened there gives us something to study.

Widen the Frame

Stress and anxiety can narrow — or reduce the flexibility of — attention.

This experiment asks what happens when you deliberately move in the opposite direction and broaden visual awareness.

Why try this?

Research does not support the claim that peripheral vision makes negative emotion impossible or that it “opens the unconscious mind.”

What research does show is that anxiety is associated with changes in visual attention.

Some research suggests anxiety can make it harder to dynamically expand attentional scope, while negative emotional states are often associated with narrower or more selective visual attention.

Experimental work has also associated positive affect with broader visual attention.

Widen the Frame is therefore used here as something much simpler: an experiment in attentional width.

The question is not: “Did this switch something off?”

The question is: “What changed when you deliberately broadened your visual awareness?”

Who Drove You Home?

You arrive home.

Turn off the engine.

And realise you cannot remember much of the last ten minutes.

Yet the car stopped at traffic lights. Maintained distance. Changed direction. Responded to other road users.

You did not become unconscious.

But much of a familiar skilled task was operating without constant deliberate narration.

Automaticity creates efficiency.

It also creates a question.

How much of expert performance depends on knowing when to think — and knowing when to stop thinking about what you already know?

When the Arena Changes

Watch for

Capability travelling into a changing task.

Then ask

What remains when the arena changes?

Sport makes performance visible.

The moment is easier to see when there is a scoreboard.

A finish line.

A clock.

A final play.

That is why sport appears throughout the Performance Lab.

Not because performance belongs to athletes.

Because sport often gives us a clearer view of something happening everywhere else.

The same questions exist in meeting rooms.

Classrooms.

Hospitals.

Laboratories.

Stages.

Homes.

And sometimes in a parked car outside work.

A moment is data.

It can matter enormously.

It can change careers. Decide championships. End relationships. Begin them.

But one performance event is still one performance event.
